With a saturated market like today, it is very hard to launch a product and get consumer interested in your product. Following are the strategies that successful companies use to make their products stand out from the crowd.

1. BRANDING

Branding is what sets Starbucks apart from a generic coffee. There are definitely better tasting burgers out there, but In and Out is popular because it is a brand. The difference between a regular footwear and Nike is the branding. Think about it for a moment.

If you want to set yourself apart from a plethora of products, you will have to make a brand out of your product. You will have to give your product a personality, a character and a story.

2. PACKAGING

Packaging too, comes under the umbrella of branding. Packaging is the physical personification of your brand story. Great package design will make your product jump off the shelves.

3. UNIQUE SELLING POINT

Ask yourself this question? What is so unique about my product that people should buy it? Why should they buy my product instead of other similar products available?

If you already have the answer to the question, then great. But if you don’t have the answer, then you need to work on finding what’s unique about your product.

Examples

Nike’s unique selling point is high quality sports products for professional athletes.

FedEx came in during the time of slow U.S postal deliveries. It distinguished itself by becoming a simply fast delivery service.

YOUR STORY

Create a story around your product. A story that can build an emotional connection with your customers and a story that clearly communicates the value of your product.

IKEA

The story written on Ikea’s website is as follows

“We’ve come a long way since Ingvar Kamprad founded IKEA in 1943. From being a tiny Swedish business, selling through a mail-order catalogue, IKEA has become one of the most well-known home furnishing brands in the world. Today, there are hundreds of IKEA stores around the globe, and more are coming. Read more about our fascinating story — from the very beginning, to what we are doing right now.”

In this story, Ikea describes its history and journey, what does the company do, its value and impact. on the world.

PICK A NICHE

Picking a niche is another way to differentiate yourself from the others. You don’t go to a general doctor for the treatment of your teeth, you go to the dentist, the specialist in teeth. Same is the case with the products. For picking a niche, you have to choose a narrow segment of market. Your product should specifically be made for a very specific group of people.

Examples

While everyone else was making cosmetics, BodyShop decided to target only the “conscious consumers” by positioning itself as a brand that makes cosmetics with natural and cruelty-free ingredients.

Another classic example is the Lefty’s — the left hand store. As the name suggests, this store sells kitchen and garden tools and stationery products only for the people that use their left hand. The products include tools like scissors, bottle openers, garden pruners etc.
